Ways to learn through Inquiry: Guiding children to deeper understanding (3- 8 years)
Facilitated by Jo Fahey
Inquiry is frequently misunderstood. In this workshop Jo will explore what inquiry can look and sound like with children in the early years. Children naturally inquire so we must tap into their ways of learning. How can the environment be organised so that it’s conducive to children’s inquiries?
How can the provocations we offer be woven seamlessly into the rich texture of the teaching and learning so that children go deeper in their understanding?
Jo will take us through some of the ways that children inquire, including:
- Socio-dramatic play
- Read-alouds and responses
- Browsing and viewing – leading to reading and writing
- Tinkering
- Exploration of materials and ideas in science and mathematics
Jo will also show how restorative justice practices in this age range can help children to deepen their understanding of the social aspects of learning. This rich tapestry of intellectual and social learning can enhance children’s wellbeing through positive experiences in self-regulation and communication.
Video footage, photographs and other documentation will demonstrate multiple ways of inquiring. Opportunities for participants to share their practice will be embedded in the workshop so please bring along examples.
