Play and Pedagogical Documentation: How will we know what learning is taking place? (3-8 years)
Facilitated by Jo Fahey
Educators often say, “Yes, I see the value of play but how will I document the learning?”
Given the devolved nature of play, whereby children have — and need to have — ownership, documentation and interpretation of what happens, can be challenging. Documentation can also be time-consuming.
In this workshop educators will examine and critique different ways of documenting children’s play to make the learning explicit. Further, Jo will show how to use discussion with the children both before and after play to assess children’s emerging understandings.
Jo’s workshop will include:
- Learning Stories and Learning Snapshots for the 3-5 year olds
- Examples of children aged 5-7 years drawing and writing about their play experiences
- Buddy classes playing together in a semi-structured play environment and documenting their own learning
- Socio-cultural aspects of assessment and documentation: where there is a focus on the group rather than individuals.
Please bring along examples of documentation from your early childhood setting/school to discuss.
